They Sang for Horses

Here's a book that belongs on your bookshelf:

They Sang for Horses: The Impact of the Horse on Navajo and Apache Folklore.
by Clark, La Verne Harrell.

Desire for horses is nothing new around here.

Horse Rescues ALWAYS need Help

The folks who open their doors to unwanted horses deserve our special appreciation. Unwanted horses come with all kinds of problems, but that doesn't deter the dedicated folks trying to make it better for the horse.

There are probably more but right now three are on my radar:

Four Corners Equine Rescue in Aztec

Spring Creek Horse Rescue in Ignacio

Lasso Horse Rescue in Pagosa Springs

How can you help them? Send them money, feed, tack. Volunteer to come muck stalls, or adopt/foster one of their rescues. There are a lot of suggestions on the websites.

SkyHorse Saddle Company

Skyhorse Saddles
You are going to be selling your old saddle on 4CornersHorseTrader.com after you take a look at the SkyHorse saddles. Lisa and Loren are truely artists in leather, turning out custom saddles of incredible quality from their shop in Durango. Their prices start at $5,000 so you might have to sell your horsetrailer too to come up with that much cash, but, it would be worth it!

SKYHORSE SADDLES

Sarah Rose Gallery

Sarah Rose is a horse sculptor in Bayfield, Colorado. Her model horses are made out of urethane resin and are so lifelike that you feel like getting them a bucket of grain. Perhaps if I ask nicely, she will let me post an image from her website?

Horse Talk

If you don't look at Horse Talk, you are missing a good regional resource. They have a website for every state in the Union. They are really nice to do business with if you want a paid advertisement, and they will advertise non-commercial stuff for free. It makes a nice community contact point, though with our four state problem, it doesn't work out for the immediate 4-Corners region. We'll try to fill that void here on 4chorsetrader and alert you to things we find on Horse Talk.

New Mexico has the original Horse Talk. It has the most resources of any state and a big user base. The other states are fledgling, but worthy of your support.

Long Horse Website

I don't know the breed, but these horses are in high demand at Colorado dude ranches.

LONG HORSES

My favorite is the buffalo killers.

Eclectic Horseman

Eclectic Horseman is a Colorado magazine, published in Elbert. The magazine is dedicated to fine horsemanship and aims primarily at the vaquero style rider, though anyone interested in the nuances of horsemanship would be stimulated by the good articles on practice and theory. They feature great clinicians such as Buck Brannaman, Martin Black, Brian Nuebert, Clay Wright, Harry Witney and numerous others. It's a source for quality riding apparel, tack, and educational materials such as books and dvds. They also have a great collection of free articles online. One thing that you might find really useful is the clinic reports that describe the experience of attending various clinics. It's a good tool for knowing what you are going to get out of the time and expense it takes to get yourself and horse to work with a specific clinician.

I was happy to see the Eclectic Horseman booth at the Colorado Horse Expo in Durango. It was nice to chat with them a few minutes about their endeavor. Check out their website www.eclectic-horseman.com/

I like endorsing regional entrepreneurs. The 4-Corners horsemans community has a lot of hidden assets like the Eclectic Horseman, that can help us promote our own endeavors and keep us from loosing ourselves in the national marketplace.

ps. Tell Emily to get the forum working again.

Gobernador Cowboy: Billy Hibbler

I did not want to send my mustang, Jemez Dancing, off for training. I really had no intentions of doing so, but yesterday Billy Hibbler came down to pick up his little mare, Rita, and we went out for a ride. I rode Cracker Joe, my little hinny, and Billy rode Jemez Dancing. They looked fabulous together. Maybe it was the light in the canyon or something, but JD seemed to glow. I asked Billy how much it would cost me for him to put 30 days riding on my sometimes spooky mustang. At 53, I am getting reluctant to get on unreliable mounts. Billy said that he normally charges $600, but he would cut me a special deal since we were friends and I hadn't charged him anything for working with his crazy little mare.

I have known Billy for more than a year. He and his partner, Vicky, live in Gobernador. Vicky cooks at Navajo City. Billy shoes and trims my horses for me... he is the only guy that will come out as far as I live. He does pretty well traveling all over the region shoeing, but his real love is horse training and horse trading. He always has a new bronc in his pens, and then suddenly he is riding the ex-bronc all over the country. He learned this skill in Oklahoma where he grew up around a sale barn. He can ride a horse to make it look like it is worth twice what you'd normally expect. No wonder he made JD look so good!

Now, just like any real cowboy, Billy can drive you absolutely crazy. He loves to talk about horses and horse training. He loves to speculate what any horse might be worth. He loves to swap his good horses for good blooded horses that just need a little training. Sometimes, I just have to cut in and tell him, "Billy, do you think you could give me a turn to talk?" Well, that never lasts long, but the man has a good heart and a way with broncs. We're good buddies.

If you might need him to work on your horses, give him a call: 505-801-4364. Tell him you got the referral from his ol' friend down in Largo Canyon.

Letter from Jen at Ruffsong Ranch in Gallup

hi Patricia,

How are you and how is Paisley??? hope you are all doing great!

i wanted to pass along some info in case you or somebody you know might be interested in the following:

i have a registered pure Clydesdale mare, black, a true 17 hands, sound to ride or breed, built very nicely, more compact than typical, both her parents are black, she is 10 yrs old, gentle and sweet, you can sit on her and plod around but she is not officially "trained". she has a blaze and 3 stockings and some stifle white and she has the sabino gene. we are currently awaiting results of a blood test to see if she is still in foal. she was confirmed via ultra sound in September but we wanted to check again. she is from Missouri, from a very long-time, well-established breeder that showed (she is NOT a pmu). she would be released on an adoption contract from her breeder, stating that she would have good care, etc and also the contract says that the breeder might want a foal back out of her someday. if she is in foal, the adoption fee would be $1500, if she is open it would be $1000. if pregnant, the sire of the foal is our foundation AQHA stallion, who is 15.1 and dun, and trained in dressage. the adoption fee, if pregnant, MIGHT be negotiable...

we also have a 15 yr old, 18 hand (yes--really 18 hands!), bright sorrel/flaxen, flashy blue-eyed Clyde gelding, who is a full brother to the above mare. he does not have papers, but he is from the same breeder, apparently Clyde breeders used to not register geldings. he is broke to ride, with a bit and bridle (included) but i dont think has ever been ridden with a saddle. he is a good boy, lets you mount from a fence, has some get up and go to him, but is safe and sound. he has an adoption fee of $1000 as well an adoption contract.

please pass this email along to anyone you think might be interested. i would SO appreciate it! they would need to go to GOOD homes, references required. we have decided to get out of the breeding business and focus on dressage and riding, so we are down-sizing, we are also gelding Robin in a few weeks, as i have been taking dressage lessons on him again and that endeavor will be much easier without the added issue of hormones come spring! please feel free to look at my web site (link below) for pics of the Clyde mare, and also PAisley's half sister, a 2006 dun Canadian WB filly (price reduced to $1800) and pics of the stallion. pictures of the Clyde gelding available on request.

thanks for your time reading this and thx for passing it along.
